Thyroid Aspiration
Thyroid Aspiration
Thyroid aspirations, commonly known as fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy, are a diagnostic technique used to assess thyroid nodules. In this procedure, a slender needle is inserted into the nodule to obtain a small tissue or fluid sample.
This sample is then analyzed under a microscope to determine whether the nodule is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Key Points about Thyroid Aspirations:
-
Purpose:
-
FNA is mainly utilized to evaluate the characteristics of thyroid nodules, particularly those larger than 1 cm or those exhibiting other concerning traits.
-
-
Procedure:
-
Usually conducted in a doctor’s office or outpatient clinic, the area is cleaned, and the needle is guided into position using ultrasound to ensure precise sampling.
-
-
Results:
-
The findings can inform treatment options. A benign result may indicate that no further action is required, whereas a malignant result could necessitate surgery or additional evaluation.
